Trivia

  • Donald Duck, Panchito Pistoles, and José all starred in the film The Three Caballeros. José first appeared alongside Donald in Disney's 1943 animated feature film Saludos Amigos.
  • José is based on a parrot spotted by Walt Disney during his Brazilian trip. He was created during World War II events via the "Good Neighbor Policy" to enforce Brazil's cooperation. He represents every aspect of the typical Brazilian stereotype.
  • His clothes represent the Brazilian "ladies man" and his happiness resembles that of Rio de Janeiro.
  • The name José is the Portuguese form of the name Joseph. The name Carioca is not so much a name as a word, meaning a person from Rio de Janeiro.
  • His nickname, and also his name in Brazil, is "Zé Carioca". "Zé" is a normal nickname for a person called José.
  • Curiously, in the 2017 DuckTales series, José's first name is pronounced "ho-ZAY," as if it were from Spanish, where it is pronounced /xoˈse/. The Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation of his name is closer to "zho-ZEH" (specifically /ʒoˈzɛ/). Carioca's last name is pronounced in neither the Spanish nor Portuguese way, but in the assimilated English way as "Karr-ee-O-Kuh" (/kæriˈoʊkə/). The Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation is closer to "Kah-ree-AW-Kuh" (specifically /kaɾiˈɔkɐ/).
  • Originally, he was depicted as a cigar smoker in Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, handing out cigars to just about everyone; however, due to changes in cultural attitudes towards tobacco, this is no longer the case.
